Bruno to head down under in 2011?

IT has been a stellar year for multi-talented musician Bruno Mars.

Since leaving his native Hawaii at 17 for Los Angeles, he has become a producing and writing gun for hire as well as an acclaimed artist in his own right. His collaborations include Travie McCoy's Billionaire, B.o.B's Nothin' On You and the Cee Lo Green's monster hit F--- You. His debut album, Doo-wops and Hooligans, has already gone gold here and has offered up two No. 1 singles - Just the Way You Are and Grenade.??My earliest musical memory is watching my dad playing an Elvis Presley video.??I grew up with a lot of 1950s doo-wop music and then later on in high school got into hip-hop and R&B ... Pharrell and Timbaland.??In Hawaii, you are in the middle of the world and collecting different influences from everywhere.

Hawaii is so laid back and everyone is so happy and content. In LA, people are there for a reason, like me. It's much faster and something I really had to get used to.

Writing for other people taught me a lot.

When you start on a song and one little idea turns into something like the Cee Lo song, it is an incredible feeling.

We never know if a song is going to be a hit.

We just knew FU felt so damn good. We thought 'what do you really want to say to a girl who leaves you for more money?' The way he performed it and sat in that groove is amazing.

Writing is so unorthodox for me - it can come from anything, any time.

It can come from me humming something and recording it on my phone, it can come from the studio, playing keys. You never know when it's going to hit you.

I always put 100 per cent into everything that I do, whether it's for me or for somebody else.

But when it's mine I am always thinking about the show and the live element. When I put my album together it was almost like putting a set list together. You want to open up with a big song and have everyone dancing by the second song, then slow it down and get on the piano and then the guitar.

I am so happy people are really liking Grenade.

It's my favourite song on the album. I spent a lot of time writing it and rewriting it and I really wanted to capture the proper emotion and let people hear me sing the blues for the first time.

Just the Way You are was about someone special.

I was in a relationship with a beautiful woman and I would watch her get ready and put on 10 different outfits and do her hair 10 different ways just to go to dinner with me. That was my song applauding that. It's amazing what women do to make themselves feel beautiful when I thought she looked her best in her sweat pants. I'm no longer in that relationship but we remain good friends. I am a single man. Maybe not fancy free - but definitely footloose.

It feels weird to be nominated for seven Grammy Awards.

The main thing is that hard work pays off. It's a little corny but it's the truth - we busted our a---s in the studio every single day trying to produce songs and stay true to ourselves.

I am hoping I can walk away with one.

I am really happy for Cee Lo and B.o.B - those guys work really hard and put out some great music and I would love them to take home something. But I can speak for all of us when I say that you never do it for an award. We are doing music for us.

Everyone has been very positive and I am a very positive person.

I'm having fun and I enjoy doing music. I want people to know that and it's all I know how to do. The reason I moved to California is so I can one day take care of my family by doing music.

I am trying to get down to Australia at the top of the year.

I am originally from Hawaii so I feel like I am related to Australians in a way. I understand that island lifestyle and I can't wait to get down there. There are great beaches and I heard the women are beautiful.
